Solomon was the son of Peter Shively and Elizabeth Heinsen.Peter,his father,was brought to this country at the age of 7yrs and placed with a family as a redemptioner. At the age of majority or perhaps when the war began with England,Peter joined the Army and fought for the Patriots.He then had his freedom and the ability to buy land. He moved his family to Perry county. He had a second wife Christiana Linn and subsiquently more children.At the time of his death Peter had 18 children and 98 grandchildren.

Solomon married first Elizabeth Bower 1777–1813 the daughter of Christopher S Bower 1744–1814 and Maria Dorthea Shearer 1749–1811.
