The following information is a synopsis from "A biographical history of the Eby Family", by Ezra E. Eby
Born in Waterloo, and raised on a farm two miles south-west of Berlin, John then went to town to work as a clerk in a general store for about six years. In 1867 he moved to Missouri, USA and also Kansas where he became a book-keeper. By the age of 21 he joined the Church of New Jerusalem (Swedenborgian church) and by 1870 was licensed to preach. He was ordained on 11 May 1873 in Jefferson City, Missouri. In 1873 he became pastor of the New Frankford Society of the New Church in Philadelphia for four years. He moved to Toronto, Ontario, in 1877, becoming pastor of the New Church Society. In 1879 he became a General Missionary through out the United States, and then became a missionary with the Canada Association of the New Church. In January 1889 he published a 185 page book "Missionary Talks on Subjects of New Church Doctrine".
