Thomas Henry McClintock was the son of British immigrants, most likely from Ireland. He was a 1898 graduate of Boston University Medical School. At that point BUMS had a curriculum that tilted heavily toward homeopathy, and the McClintocks had to move many times before Thomas could establish a successful practice in an area receptive to that less traditional form of medicine. He eventually became a company doctor for Standard Oil Corporation. By 1908, he and his family were established in Brooklyn, then on the edge of New York City, where he took care of the crews of the Standard tankers that docked at the busy Brooklyn shipyard.

When World War I began Thomas was sent overseas as a military surgeon, a posting that further established his conventional medical bona fides when he returned. Happily he returned in time to override Sara McClintock's conviction that attending college would doom daughter Barbara to a life of spinsterhood, and encourage his daughter to enroll at Cornell University. And the rest is Nobel History.
