John was born in Ward Township, Allegany County, NY and passed away at his home in Weston's Mills, NY after a short illness at age 67. He came to Olean, NY as a young man and attended Westbrook's Commercial Academy from which he graduated in 1893. He then went to Weston's Mills and was employed by Weston Brothers (became the A. Weston Lumber Co.) In 1913, he and a surviving son, Clyde W. Collins formed the Olean Service Company and he worked there until his death. He was serving his third term on the Portville board of assessors and was one of the organizers of the Weston's Mills Fire District (Kinney Hose Co.) and was a member of the Board of fire commissioners. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Weston's Mills and later the Portville Methodist Church and served as an active member through out his life. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Amelia E. Collins; One son, Clyde W. Collins and one brother, Orville A. Collins of Scio, NY. The funeral was held at his home on March 13, 1938. Possible father of J. Elwyn Collins?
