A private graveside service for Dr. Ruth Rice Puffer of McMinnville will be held in Pleasant Street Cemetery, Berlin, Mass.
Miss Puffer died Sept. 2, 2002, in her home. She was 95.
She was born Aug. 31, 1907, in Berlin, the daughter of J. Adams and E. Hope Rice Puffer. She graduated from Hudson High School, Hudson, Mass., in 1925 and from Smith College in 1929. After graduating, she worked in the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. She became director of statistical service in the Tennessee Department of Public Health, Nashville, in 1933.
She pursued graduate studies at Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Harvard School of Public Health, and received a doctor of public health degree from Harvard University in 1943. In 1953 she became director of health statistics for the Pan American Health Organization, Washington, D.C.
Miss Puffer semiretired in 1970, but continued to work as a health consultant in Washington, D.C., the Americas, India and Indonesia. She wrote several books and papers on public health.
She moved to Corvallis in 1982 and continued to work as a consultant. She had lived in McMinnville since 1991.
She received the Centennial Award for outstanding service in public health, from the Tennessee public health service in 1970. In the same year, she was presented an honorary doctor of science degree from Smith College.
Miss Puffer received the Abraham Horwitz Award for Inter-American Health in 1978. She was among 11 people selected this year as Public Health Heroes, in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of the Pan American Heatlh Organization.
She belonged to the American Public Health Association and had served as its vice president. She was a fellow in the American Statistical Association.
Survivors include a sister, Evelyn Knowlton of Medford, N.J., and a nephew, Richard Field of Corvallis.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Field, and a brother, Stanwood Puffer.
