Chad "Sonny" Roberts, 79, of Salem, died Monday April 7, 2003 at St. Anthony Hospital in Effingham.

Services at the Rogers-Atkins Funeral Home in Salem with Minister Tim Ozment officiating. Burial with military rites in East Lawn Cemetery in Salem.

Mr. Roberts was born on May 26, 1923 in Olney, the son of Ansel Chadwick and Lillian (Smith) Roberts. He married Jacquelyn Davisson on March 11, 1954 in Olney. She survives.

He was a retired lieutenant at Joliet Corrections Center and was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Salem and a member of Salem American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Federation of State, County & Municipal employees.

Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn Roberts of Salem; two sons, Pete Roberts and his wife, Paulette of Springfield and Chad Roberts and his wfie, Mary of Salem; two daughters, Charlotte Bruce and her husband, Terry of Olney and Janas Burton and her husband, Dusty of Downs; five sisters, Virginia McIlwain of Rockford, Mary Jane Plummer of Olney, Winifred Joiner of Carbondale, Colo., Peggy Carson of Olney, and Evelyn Germer of Olney; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several step-grand and step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Christopher Myers and a sister, Eloise VanCleve.
