In 1860, he was a carpenter living in York, York County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 5" tall with light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty in York August 4, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9 as a private with Co. K, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. Contracting "chronic diarrhea" (dysentery) while at Antietam, he was hospitalized in York from September 24, 1862, through January 5, 1863, returning to duty January 7, 1863, with the dysentery unabated. He suffered a severe contusion in the arm from a shell fragment at the battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863, but honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in York March 30, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg May 7 as a private with Co. H, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry. He contracted measles while stationed at Pittsburgh and hospitalized at Alexandria, Virginia. He honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

He married Mary Blockinger April 3, 1864, in York and fathered Mary A. (b. @1867), William H. (b. 03/03/69), and Susan K. (b. 01/13/73 - married a Horn). He returned from the army now not only struggling with dysentery, but with a bad case of eczema, both of which besieged him for the rest of his life. He died reportedly from blood poisoning.
