Elizabeth came from a family of Quakers who were also listed as Patriots during the Revolutionary War. Only a few generations separated her from her Huguenot roots. Shortly after her marriage to William Cox, the War of 1812 began. Whether as a volunteer or compelled, William left her to serve the war efforts. He survived the war and lived for a decade before dying.

Betsy, as she was nicknamed, had just given birth to her fifth child when she became widowed for life. She was just a young mother when her ten year old began to share the burden by parenting a seven year old sister and two toddlers while Betsy took care of the baby.

Life was difficult. She began taking in laundry and became a seamstress to support her family. Her eldest daughter followed suit. They became inseparable as they lived out their days in each other's company.
