Ralph's parents were James Wesley Hogg and Maletha Hogg, second cousins whose families lived in Letcher County, Kentucky. James was a farmer and carpenter. In the early 1880s James and Maletha moved to Nebraska, perhaps to find work in the new stockyard industry in South Omaha, Nebraska.

By 1880 James and Maletha had 6 children. Shortly after the move to Nebraska, Ralph was born. In 1900 at the age of 16 Ralph worked as a laborer for a meat packing company.

Around 1901 when he was in his teens, Ralph married Mary J. Magee (sometime spelled McGee). She was a globe maker in 1900, the oldest of 9 children. Her parents were Irish Catholics who got married and immigrated to America in 1881 as teenagers. Mary was born shortly after their arrival in Virginia. The Magee family had moved to Illinois and then to Nebraska by 1989. It was there, in South Omaha, that Ralph and Mary would have first met.

In the 25 years between 1902 and 1927 Ralph and Mary had 14 children of their own. At least 3 died in infancy or childhood. Initially the family moved around, probably looking for work - first to Iowa, then back to Nebraska before settling in Chicago where Ralph became a millwright.

Ralph died in Chicago at the age of 48 when his youngest child was 5 year old. It is not known what was the cause of death, but there is a family history of early death due to kidney problems. His brother, Greene Hogg died at the age of 49 of kidney disease like Greene's son Vergil who died of nephritis (Bright's disease) at the age of 54. Ralph's father also died of kidney disease.

Ralph was buried at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Chicago in the plot with his infant daughters, Mary and Catherine. Mary died in 1961 at the age of 79 and is also buried in Mt. Olivet.
