Tpr. James V. Browne was the first New York State Trooper to die from on-duty illness/injury - on 28 May 1919 he died from the Spanish Flu pandemic.
Tpr. James V. Browne name appears on the "eligible list from the first examination held 14 June 1917. Tpr. James V. Browne was one of the original "camp men" at "Camp Newayo" when the NYSP were formed in Manlius, NY, the summer of 1917, a total of 232 Troopers enlisted in 1917. Their first assignment was police the New York State Fair in the summer of 1917. When the NYSP was formed, men enlisted for 2 years service, some reenlisted, many resigned and/or were drafted in the military. At that time World War I was going on in Europe, most of the Troopers submitted WWI draft registration cards, believing they wouldn't be drafted by joining the NYSP. Not true, vast majority were drafted.
Tpr. James V. Browne enlisted in the NYSP in 1917, was drafted into the US Military in 1918, and died in 1919 of the Spanish Flu.
