From 1827 to 1828, Burke and Hare began to supply him with "subjects," being offered over £7 for each corpse. During 1828 Burke and Hare were arrested. Hare turned King's evidence, and Burke was subsequently hanged and dissected. Knox was popularly considered just as guilty, since he never questioned how the bodies were acquired. Although cleared of complicity, his anatomy school became less popular, and in 1844 he left Edinburgh. He later became pathological anatomist to the Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital at Brompton.
