Christopher Hendershot

  • Birth 1734 Tewksbury, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, USA
  • Death 17 Apr 1812 Clarkson, Peel Regional Municipality, Ontario, Canada
  • Burial Mississauga, Peel Regional Municipality, Ontario, Canada
  • Plot Section A49, Plot #66
  • Memorial ID 82163405

Buried in this same plot is Christopher Hendershot's 3rd wife - Christeen (sic) Smith.

It is not know exactly when burials began to take place in Springcreek Cemetery. The monuments establish clearly that it was in use at a very early date. It has often been debated if Christopher Hendershot's gravestone is the oldest stone in the cemetery. Since the inscription states "Sacred to the memory of …" it cannot be stated for certain that he was actually buried here. However, other stones use the phrase "Here lies…" which indicates that the Cemetery had been established as early as 1825.

The Henneschiedt [Hendershot] family was originally from Meisenheim, Germany. Around 1709 Michael Hendershot immigrated to New York and the oldest branch of the family stems from him. Family allegiances were divided during the American Revolution and the descendants of Michael Hendershot's son Casper immigrated to the Niagara Peninsula as United Empire Loyalists. Twenty years later Christopher (Christian) Hendershot and his family of 20 children also immigrated to Canada, settling near Hamilton, Ontario.

During the 19th century several more Hendershot families immigrated from Germany to North America, many of whom settled in New Jersey and Pelham Township, Welland County, Ontario.

I took this picture in the summer of 2010.
