John Albert Silber, 78, of Denver, died Friday, December 16, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

John was born April 10, 1933, in Eagle Lake, Minnesota, the son of Emil and Sophie Silber. He completed school in Nashua. On July 8, 1951, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Nordman in Charles City, Iowa. John worked for Walsh Manufacturing as a welder after marrying Dorothy until 1961 when the couple bought a farm south of Plainfield. In 1966, they bought a larger dairy operation SE of Horton, a farm that they still own. He started work at Chamberlains, a defense plant in Waterloo in 1974, and worked as a Supervisor in their maintenance department until they closed in 1992.

John had a love for flying all of his life and owned his own plane, a Piper Cherokee. He also enjoyed motorcycling, RV camping and was a life-long tinkerer who could fix about anything.
John is survived by his wife Dorothy of Denver, five sons; Rick (Mary) Silber of Camden Point, Missouri, Randy (Candy) Silber of Rocklin, California, Lonny (Sherrie) Silber of Ankeny, Cory (Debby) Silber of Knoxville and Galesburg, Illinois, and Rodney (Lynn) Silber of Nashua; sister, Margaret Silber of Mesa, Arizona; 18 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by brothers Eitel and Gordon Silber; granddaughter, Nicole Marie Jean Silber and a nephew, Andy Silber.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 22, 2011, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Denver with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver. Memorials may be directed to the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City.
