WASHINGTON, IND. - Services for John Simpson Hastings, 78, senior judge of the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals at Chicago and former president of the Indiana University board of trustees, will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. in Fourth Presbyterian Church, Chicago.

A graveside service will be Friday in Washington.

Judge Hastings, a native of Washington, Ind., died yesterday in a Chicago hospital.

He had served as senior judge on the appeals court since 1969. He was appointed judge for the 7th circuit in 1957 and became chief judge of the circuit in 1959.

Much of his life centered around Indiana University, which he attended two years before his appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

After graduating from West Point in 1920, he attended Field Artillery Basic School at Fort Knox in 1921, then returned to I.U. for law school.

As a student, he was cochairman of the University Memorial Campaign Fund, which underwrote Memorial Hall women's dormitory, Indiana Memorial Union Building and Memorial Stadium.

A 1924 law school graduate, Hastings, received the Gamma Eta Gamma award for the highest scholastic average in his class.

Upon his admission to the bar, Hastings returned to Washington to practice law in the family firm, Hastings & Hastings, the city's oldest law firm.

He was a member of Indiana University Alumni Association, of which he was president two years, 1936 alumni representative of the I.U. board of trustees and board president from 1950 to 1959.

He also was director of the I.U. Foundation and in 1964 was named national chairman of the 1964-65 I.U. Law School Fund campaign. From 1949, to 1954, he was a member of the Indiana State Board of Examiners.

A Republican, Hastings was Washington's civil defense director during the board of governors of the James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Association and director of Home Building and Loan Association at Washington.

President Dwight Eisenhower in 1957 appointed him to the Circuit Court of Appeals.

Upon retiring from the I.U. board to accept the judgeship, Hastings was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree by I.U. In 1961, Northwestern University conferred a similar degree upon him.

Two years after his appointment, he was named the court's chief judge.

He was a member of the Judicial Conference of the United States; the American, Seventh Circuit and Indiana State Bar associations, and the Chicago Club.

Memberships included Order of the Coif, American Legion, Phi Delta Phi, Phi Gamma Delta, Rotary Club, Union League, Masonic Lodge and Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi.

Chief Federal Judge William Steckler of the Southern District of Indiana, said of Hastings: "In the death of Judge Hastings the nation has lost one of its finest judges."

"He was not only a great and fair judge but a judicial administrator extraordinary. He was admired and respected by all who knew him."

Memorial contributions may be made to the I.U. School of Law through the I.U. Foundation.
