Joseph Adams (1796-1871), the son of a British Gunner, emigrated from Armagh/Monaghan Ireland in 1813. He was born at sea while his parents were moving to Ireland from England. In about 1821, Joseph married Sarah (Sally) Wood (1804-1845) to begin a family of twelve.
