Madison- Alex A. Abplanalp, age 76, of Madison, died Saturday, November 20, 1993, at home after a prolonged illness. He was born November 20, 1917 in Arena, Wisconsin, the son of Andrew and Frieda (Zurbruegg) Abplanalp.
Alex graduated from Arena High School and served in the United States Army for four years during World War II and was stationed with a medical unit in Paris, France. After returning from service, he married the former Catherine Teasdale on February 7, 1948 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington. Alex and Catherine owned and operated a cheese factory in Mt. Horeb for nine years. They later moved to Madison to raise their children, A.J., Sue, and Andy. Alex worked at the Main Post Office in Madison for 20 years, retiring in 1980 to enjoy his four grandchildren,
Brad, Aaron, Nick ana Lauren. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and its Holy Name Society, and was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 1318. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Alex is survived by his wife, Catherine; his three children, A.J. (Diane) Abplanalp of Menasha, Wisconsin, Susan Abplanalp of Franklin, Wisconsin, and Andrew (Sue) Abplanalp of Monona; four grandchildren, Brad, Aaron, Nick, and Lauren; a sister, Olga Blumke of Verona; a brother, Harold (Rachel) Abplanalp of Mt. Horeb; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Rose Anderegg, Ida Abplanalp, and Hulda Erb; and three brothers, Adolph, Walter and Alfred Abplanalp. Funeral services will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield Street, at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 23, 1993, with Father Jim Murphy and Father John Meinholz concelebrating, and with Reverend Joyce Alford giving the homily. Entombment will be in Roselawn Memorial Park with military services conducted by the Madison Veteran Council Firing Squad. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 22, 1993 at the GUNDERSON FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his name.
