Met His Death While Riding Skip at Dunn Mine.
John Berg was killed at the Dunn mine last Tuesday evening while riding to surface on the skip. Through some misunderstanding in the signals the brakeman didn't stop the skip at the landing but continued it on up to the pocket. When John saw what was happening he sought to save his life by jumping. Just what he did is not known for when he was found he was lying unconscious on the ground at the mouth of the shaft.
It is thought that he jumped off the skip and struck his head on one of the timbers or on some sharp stone or other object on the ground as there was a big gash in his head and his fae was badly scratched up.
He regained consciousness for a few moments and recognized John Erickson. These were the last words that he spoke. The ambulance was summoned and he was loaded into it and started towards the hospital but he died enroute.
John Berg was the oldest son of Rinold Berg, night captain at the Crystal Falls mine. He was one of the finest young men that Crystal Falls could boast of and at the time of his death was holding the position of time keeper at the Dunn mine, a position to which he had been appointed about a month ago.
