Francis, age 17, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 27 February 1862 in Tallahassee, Florida. He was mustered as 4th Sergeant, in Company C, 5th Florida Infantry. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant on 1 October 1862. He was sent to the hospital on 30 October 1862. He was admitted to the Florida Hospital also known as General Hospital No. 11 in Richmond on 5 November 1862. He died there while a patient under the care of Martha Reid, who was a good friend of his mother. Francis died of typhoid fever at the age of 18 years old. His death papers described him as follows: born in Leon County, Florida; age 18; light complexion; blue eyes; light hair; 5 feet & 10 inches tall; merchant by profession. Attorney David E. Maxwell, his brother, filed a claim on 28 April 1863 to recover $105.33 amount owed his brother behalf for his parents.
