Virgil Winton Vail

Virgil Vail was born on a farm outside Brewster, Kansas on March 3, 1926. He was the eighth child of Arthur and Elnora Vail. The daily routine at the Vail home revolved around family meals and family devotions. Virgil often said that the Bible reading, singing, and prayer during family altar was the most formative influence in his life.

Most of Virgil's life, he lived in Nampa, Idaho. On June 13, 1947, he married Mary Maxine Gardner of Portland, Oregon and they were married 58 years until Maxine's death in 2006. Virgil and Maxine had four children: Mike, Lynda, Bob, and Larry; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. More than 20 students lived with Virgil and Maxine over the years while attending college, and nieces and nephews knew they were always welcome at Uncle Virgil's and Aunt Maxine's house.

Virgil was a graduate of Northwest Nazarene College and University of Idaho—Moscow, with additional graduate studies at Stanford University and the University of Washington. Virgil's 45-year career was dedicated to teaching in Nazarene institutions including Northwest Nazarene University, Olivet Nazarene University, Point Loma Nazarene University and Africa Nazarene University. Following Virgil's retirement from Point Loma Nazarene University, the university bestowed on him the Honorary Doctor of Science degree for a life-time of service. He was also known as an inventor, problem-solver, researcher, coach, electrician, carpenter, mechanic, repairman, and trumpeter.

Virgil moved to Bend, Oregon in 2008 where he met and married Betty Greenough on July 4, 2010. He went to be with his Lord on December 13, 2011 after a short illness.

For all of us who called him friend, brother, Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, Uncle Virgil, and Prof, he will be remembered as a "man after God's own heart."

Virgil is survived by his youngest sister, Lois McWaters of Twin Falls, Idaho; children: Mike & Connie Vail of Nashville, TN, Lynda & Terry Reed of La Pine, OR, Bob & Mary Lou Vail of Silverdale, WA, and Larry & Pamela Vail of Bourbonnais, IL; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
