all information extracted from Cook and Hall families research records of Ruth Hasten Walsh: Martha was the daughter of William Henry Cook and Josephine Hall. No information has been found about her Cook grandparents; however, her maternal grandparents were Alfred P. Hall (CSA Veteran) and Sarah Ann Wilson Howell. In the 1890's Alfred P. Hall was mayor of Ravenna, Fannin Co., TX. He owned a blacksmith shop, a general store, and his sons operated the A. P. Hall & Sons Ferry crossing the Red River from Mulberry to the Oklahoma shoreline. By 1900, the Hall family had been forced into bankruptcy by two natural disasters, flooding of the Red River and a cyclone. Martha "Mattie" Cook Winkler has been described as "strong pioneer stock". It is not known where in Tennessee she was born. Her parents were married in 1872 in Roane Co., TN, a place known for wagon train formation. The family has not been found in the 1880 census so it is possible they were either enroute to Texas or living in Oklahoma Indian territory were whites were not enumerated for purposes of census. Martha married William Henry Winkler in 1894. Born in St. Louis, MO. Winkler was the son of German immigrants. Before he died in 1913, they had 10 children. Martha used funds received from a Woodsman life policy to buy a farm. In addition to her own children, Martha reared two of her grandchildren (Helen and Dorothy, issue of Ben Winkler and Ruby Mae Blanton). When Martha died only 3 of her children survived her.
