NEWMARKET; Sophie Julia (Malek) Bennett, 89, formerly of Lamprey River Mobile Home Park, passed away Oct. 3, 2008, at Dover Rehabilitation & Living Center, after a period of declining health.

Born in Newmarket, Feb. 27, 1919, she was the daughter of Walter and Julia (Zurawski) Malek of Bay Road. She lived in Newmarket all her life and moved to Somersworth with her late husband, Charles A. Bennett, in 2005, to live with their son and daughter-in-law.

She was a member of the Newmarket Polish Club.

Sophie attended Newmarket schools, but ended her schooling at an early age to take care of her younger brothers and sister after their mother, Julia, died. She retired from working at Sam Smith Shoe, where she was a vamper.

She was predeceased by her late husband, Charles A. Bennett, who passed away Jan. 31, 2005, and by her brothers, Edward Malek, Lewis Malek and John Malek.

She is survived by her two children, Jean Raymond and her husband, Robert, of Brentwood, and Norman Bennett and his wife, Marie, of Somersworth; two granddaughters, Deborah Anderson and Donna LaRoche; two grandsons, Glenn LaRoche and Shawn Roussin; two great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; several nieces and nephews. In addition, she is also survived by a sister, Clara Homiak of Claremont, and by a brother, Theodore "Teddie" Malek of Connecticut.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 10 a.m. until noon at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, followed by a noon Funeral Service with Pastor Josh Gray, officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket. Flowers are acceptable or should friends desire, memorials may be made to Dover Rehabilitation & Living Center or Seacoast Hospice.
