Son of William McClurg Coates 1821-1860 & Margaret Jane Foresman 1828-1898. John was the oldest son.

John Coates, married Charlotte Meek on Feb 03, 1880, in Allenwood, Union County, Pa. Rev. J.W. Boyd, minister, officiating.

John & Charlotte Coates children:
Boyd McAllister Coates 1889-1955 m. Kathryn Sanders 1879-1957, no children
Oliver Meek Coates 1883-1955 m. Mary Elizabeth Foresman 1878-1960, with four children.

John, was a farmer of two acres, and their home was located on Road Camp Devitt, in Gregg Township. Their homestead was located on land known today, as the Bald Eagle State Park with the Sproul State Forrest located to the Northwest.

John Coates Dead
Well known resident of White Deer Valley passed away;
John Coates passed away at his home in White Deer Valley last Saturday morning, after but a short illness, death being the complication of the diseases. Mr. Coates had been a long time resident of White Deer where he was well known personage. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church taking an active part in all Sunday School and church worship.
He is survived by a widow and two sons; Oliver M., of Williamsport and Boyd M., at home; a sister Mrs. R.B. Tate, of Allenwood and a brother Joseph W., of Wausaw.

John Coates died at 57 years, 2m, 13d of age. Pennsylvania death Certificate # 94549. Cause: Perforation of stomach due to ulcer. Informant: Wife.
