She was born Feb. 16, 1926, in Christie, Va,. to the late Rufus and Rebeauty Martin. She lived and attended elementary schools in Virginia and North Carolina. Later her family moved to Robeson County when she was 7 years old. Mary graduated from Pembroke State College in 1947, and retired from Robeson County School System as an educator in 1981 after 31 years of service.
Mary has been a member of Berea Baptist Church since she was 10 years old.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Hardie (Red) Bell; her parents, Rufus and Rebeauty Martin; and a sister, Carlee Martin Chavis.
She is survived by her husband, Earl Deese; daughters, Jeannie Bell-Nichols of Cary, Mary Bell-Knell (Donnie) of Raleigh, Maxine Deese of Laurinburg, and Diane Deese Chavis (Ronnie) of Pembroke; sons, Dr. Joseph E. Deese and Dale Johnson, both of Maxton; granddaughter, Sunny O'Connor Myers (Isaac) of Raleigh; grandsons, Jordan Chavis of Cary and Ryan Chavis of Pembroke; brothers, Dr. Lindy Martin of Birmingham, Ala., and Dr. Julian Martin of Dearborn, Mich.; a sister, Bert Cortney of Lancaster, Pa.; and a host of relatives and friends.
A celebration of Mrs. Mary's Life will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at Berea Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. A private family burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at Berea Baptist Church Cemetery.
A member of Berea Baptist Church for more than 79 years, the family request that donations be made to Berea's Lottie Moon offering or Hospice of Robeson County.
