American Revolutionary War Veteran Major John WILLIAMS, born November 4, 1737, Old Ford Church, Old Hanover County, Virginia, died 1794, on his plantation, near Mudlick Creek, in Newberry County, South Carolina, buried in a small cemetery one mile west of Mudlick Creek, Newberry Co., on S.C. highway 65 (Mudlick Rd.) east of the juncture with S.C. highway 56.

John WILLIAMS, 1737-1794, was son of Daniel WILLIAMS 1710-1759, and of his wife, Ursula HENDERSON, 1710-1765; they married October 19, 1732.

John WILLIAMS, 1737-1784, apparently the older of the two brothers [sibling: Brigadier General James Henderson WILLIAMS] later living in Laurens District, South Carolina, was living in North Carolina, in Granville County, when his younger brother, James, became an orphan.

John WILLIAMS, 1737-1794, married twice. His first marriage was to Mary ATWOOD, daughter of James ATWOOD, of Amelia County, Virginia, and a first cousin to Mary Elizabeth FORREST, the wife of James CALDWELL.

In 1771/2, John WILLIAMS, 1737-1794, moved to District Ninety-Six, and settled on Mudlick Creek.

In 1785, around the time John moved from Laurens County, to Edgefield County, he married the second time to widow, Anna Maria GOUGE, wife of Joseph MINTER. This second marriage most likely occured in North Carolina, for when John WILLIAMS died in 1794, his brother-in-law, Joseph GOUGE, was living in North Carolina. There were no children by this second marriage.

Anna Marie GOUGE had been previously married to Joseph MINTER, who died 1784. Known children born of that union include five (5) children: John MINTER, Mary MINTER, Sarah MINTER, Anna Mariah MINTER, and Mercey MINTER.

John WILLIAMS, 1737-1794 was a member of the provincial Congress that met in Charleston on January 11, 1775. He served in the Revolutionary War. During the Revolution, his family lived at Laurens District, South Carolina, and were members of the Little River Presbyterian Church.

His will was probated 14 Oct 1794 at Edgefield County, South Carolina, where he had moved after the Revolutionary War.
