Grandson of Mary Keeling and John Williams (1689-1755), and of Sarah Wilkinson and Thomas Henderson (1653-1709).
Brother of Col James Williams (1740-1780) who died at the Battle of Kings Mountain.
Joseph was a merchant who co-operated a store known as Williams & Burton at Nutbush.
Known as Col Joseph Williams of Nutbush to distinguish him from his first cousin Col Joseph Williams of Shallow Ford (1748-1827), who was the son of Nathaniel Williams (1712-1766), who was the brother of Daniel Williams.
Married Sarah "Sally" Lanier on June 3rd, 1766, in Granville County, NC. Sally was the daughter of Elizabeth Hicks and Thomas Lanier (1722-1805).
Sally and Joseph had only one child, daughter Mary "Polly" Williams Clay.
Joseph Williams of Nutbush took in his younger cousin, then called Joseph Williams, Jr, after the younger Joseph had lost his mother in 1761 and his father in 1766. While living with his older cousin, Joseph, Jr, worked at his cousin's store, Williams & Burton at Nutbush. Later, a Joseph, Jr, partnered with his brother Robert (1744-1790) to operate the Williams Store near Shallow Ford, moved to Surry County, and became known as Joseph Williams of Shallow Ford.
Sally's sister Rebekah married Joseph's cousin, the above Joseph Williams of Shallow Ford, in 1772.
Sally's sister Betty had married Joseph Winston (1746-1815) in August 1766.
Following the death of Joseph Williams of Nutbush before May, 1774, his widow Sally married Col Robert Williams (1744-1790), brother of Joseph Williams of Shallow Ford.
Joseph Williams of Nutbush made his will in Granville County, North Carolina, on Nov 3, 1873. He added a codicil on Nov 18th, appointing his father-in-law, Thomas Lanier, as co-executor to his will, along with wife Sarah Lanier Williams, cousin and brother-in-law, Joseph Williams, Jr (of Shallow Ford), and Richard Garrison. The will was probated in May, 1774.
