Mary Jane (Skowronek) Zychowicz Jan.14, 1922 - Dec. 11, 2011
Mary Zychowicz, 89, of Point Place, passed away peacefully Sunday morning Dec. 11, 2011 at Kingston Residence of Sylvania, Ohio.
She was born Jan. 14, 1922 in Toledo to Michael and Frances (Gajewski) Skowronek. Mary attended St. Hedwig Elementary School and Woodward High School until the duties of Skowronek's Superette grocery store on Chestnut & Bronson streets called. Mary received a life education by serving many customers in the North Toledo neighborhood while keeping meticulous books at the corner grocery store.
After World War II, she married Eugene Zychowicz of north Toledo. They raised a family of six children and built a life by further serving customers in a variety of businesses. During a blessed 54 year marriage, Gene ran the business while Mary made a loving home and raised six children, with a constant emphasis on education and culture.
Mary enjoyed reading, cooking, entertaining, playing cards, traveling with her husband and celebrating her children's successes. She took enormous pride in her Polish heritage and will be known for her pierogi parties and famous cabbage recipe "kapusta z grochem" - kapusta with peas. She also took great satisfaction in being with her family, imploring them all to "Keep up the good work!"
An avid storyteller, known as "Busia" or "Great-Busia" to her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, numbering 21 and 10, Mary was a constant source of fascinating anecdotes, life stories and nuggets of wisdom. These many stories resulted in a variation on a famous phrase - W.W.B.D. - "What Would Busia Do?" Mary was also a living testimonial for her husband's business. Until the very end, even the staff at The Kingston were not immune to hearing about the wonders of Stanley's Market kielbasa.
A humble woman of quiet grace, and a devout Catholic, she was a graduate of St. Hedwig School and a former parishioner, where she celebrated the sacraments of Baptism, Communion, Confirmation and Marriage. She remained an active supporter of the school and parish. She was a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Church and former parishioner of St. Agnes Church.
Mary participated in numerous benevolent societies, military auxiliaries and was a former officer and member of the St. Ursula Mother's Club and St. Francis de Sales Chappuis Society.
Mary is survived by three daughters, Margaret Mittendorf, Kathryn (Ron) Rahal, Elizabeth Pietrykowski, and three sons, Joseph (Mary), John (Sue), Eugene (Pam). She is also survived by her beloved brother Joseph Skowronek, sister Christina (Skowronek) Wisniewski and sisters-in-law Mary Ann, Loretta and Florence.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, and brothers Ollie, Raymond, Isadore, Stanley, Walter and Paul Skowronek.
Family and friends may visit from 2-8 p.m. Wed., Dec.14, at the Thomas I. Wisniewski Funeral Home, 2426 N. Reynolds Road, Toledo, Ohio, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. A service will be held at 9 a.m. Thurs., Dec. 15, at the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 5153 Summit St., Toledo, and burial at Calvary Cemetery, Toledo.
The family would like to thank Kingston Residence and Senior Independence Hospice for their compassionate care. The family also suggests that any memorial donations in Mary's name be directed to St. John the Baptist Church Elementary School (Tuition Assistance Fund), Point Place, Toledo.
