FOUR OF CASTLE FAMILY KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT
Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Castle and two daughters, Bertha and Sylvia, were instantly killed near Harrisburg, Oregon, the night of August 13, when a Southern Pacific passenger train hit the car in which they were riding. Two other occupants of the car escaped serious injuries, according to a letter received by Dr. T. R. Castle from Emmett Castle, brother of the victim. S. W. Castle is a son of Henry Castle who formery lived east of Albia and is known to the older residents of this community. Mr.Castle has often visited here.
The party was traveling toward Harrisburg on a paved road which runs parallel to the railroad tracks, when they came upon a closed portion of the road, The detour led across the tracks and the driver of the car drove directly in front of the approaching train. The engine hit the car squarely and crushed it. The car was demolished and the bodies of the victims mutilated. Merwyn Castle, driver of the car and a brother of S. W. Castle, and Evelyn Castle escaped with their lives but were painfully injured, the girl had a broken arm and leg and numerous bruises while the boy was severly cut about the head. He was able to walk following the accident. Evelyn was found on the pilot of the engine after the train had been brought to a stop.
Apparently the driver did not see the approaching train, although the view of the tracks was not obstructed. Occupants of a car which had stopped to let the train pass, shouted a warning but it was apparently not heard. They stated they also heard one of the girls in the demolished car shout, but the warnings were unheeded.
The injured were taken to the hospital in Eugene, Oregon, where they are recovering.
The engineer of the traim stated that the car did not have any lights and he did not notice its approach until too late to stop the train. The brakes were applied but did not stop the train until after the car had been crushed.
