The students, Mared Ellen Malarik of Kinnelon NJ and Karen Lynn Ferrell of Quinwood WV, had been missing since mid-January. The two had left a movie in Morgantown WV and were hitchhiking back to their dormitory. They were last seen getting into a car with a male driver.

Mared Malarik was the daughter of Edward F. and Margaret Mary (Schmitt) Malarik.
