Lucy (Greenman) Backus, 92, of Windsor, beloved wife of the late Horace Backus, passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at Hartford Hospital.
Born in Norwich, daughter of the late Lester and Agnes (Portelance) Greenman, she lived in Windsor for the last 58 years. Lucy graduated from Norwich Free Academy and worked at Electric Boat in Groton during World War II. She also worked in the cafeteria at Clover Street School and was clerk for the former W.T. Grants. She was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Poquonock.
Lucy volunteered in the Windsor school system and the Windsor Caring Connection. She also volunteered in other activities, including being a founding member and charter member of the Windsor Independent Living Association, and was a "Family Friends" volunteer at Connecticut Children's Medical Center and Hartford Hospital.
Lucy was recognized as a "Point of Light" by President Bush for her volunteerism.
She is survived by a son, Charles L. Backus and his wife Diana DeLaHaye of Groton, MA; a daughter, Betsy and her husband Gordon Kenneson of Windsor; two grandsons, Peter W. Backus and Thomas P. Backus; a sister, Helene Manning of Amherst, MA; a cousin, Nancie Greenman; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Lester Greenman; and two sisters, Mary Greenman and Agnes Worcester.
Burial will be private in Windsor Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Lucy may be made to the Windsor Caring Connection, 330 Windsor Ave., Windsor, CT 06095, to WILA, 45 Maple Ave., Windsor, CT 06095, or to the CT Children's Medical Center Foundation, Inc., 282 Washington St., Hartford, CT 06106.
