Mary Ella (May) Wiley was born on 18 Jan 1852 in Clyde, Sandusky Co, OH, the daughter of Decatur (1828-1855) & Cynthia (May) (1833-1859) May. (There is some uncertainty as to whether Mary was born in 1851 or 1852. While her death record and gravestone show 1851, they are likely in error, as census records tend to indicate an 1852 birth year - the 1870 Census shows her age as 18 in Aug of 1870, and the 1900 Census shows her as being born in Jan 1852, for instance. Her parents were married in June of 1850, so I'm inclined to think that 1852 is the correct birth year, but I'm willing to revisit the issue should a birth record materialize).

Decatur May’s father was Joab May (1800-1885), son of Harvey May (1773-1849). Cynthia May’s father was the Rev Isaac May (1796-1874), son of the same Harvey May (1773-1849). Hence, Decatur May and Cynthia May were 1st cousins on the paternal side. They were married in Sandusky Co, on 22 Dec 1850. To their short and tragic union were born 3 children - Mary in 1852 , her brother Albert in 1853, and her sister Lillian in 1855. (Albert Decatur May - Find-A-Grave Memorial # 4127766 - was born in Clyde on 13 Dec 1853, and died on 9 Jan 1929 in Bloomingdale, Van Buren Co, MI). Lillian Cynthia May (Miller) Find-A-Grave Memorial # 43169021 was born in Clyde on 22 Aug 1855 and died on 25 Aug 1946 in Adrian, Lenawee Co, MI. Mary grew up in Sandusky Co, where the orphaned May siblings were raised by relatives. Mary E. May age 18, her younger brother Albert D. May age 16, and younger sister Lillian C. (May) Miller 15 (shown as Cynthia L. May on the census record) are shown in their grandfather Isaac May's household in Sandusky Co in the US Census of 1870.

It was there in Sandusky Co that she married on 27 Nov 1870, John Wiley, son of Thomas & Catherine (Miller) Wiley. To their union were born 7 known children, five of whom lived to adulthood: Ada (Wiley) Conklin / Carr (1872-1924), Clifford Wiley (1873-1965), Bessie (Wiley) Bartlett (1875-1964), Frank Wiley (1877-1961), and Rose (Wiley) Kahle (1883-1920). Their other 2 children, Raymond Wiley (1881-1898) and Clarence Wiley (1885-1900), died as teenagers.

In between the birth of their son Frank in Aug 1877 and the US Census of 1880, the Wiley family moved from Townsend Twp, Sandusky Co, OH to Amboy Twp, Fulton Co, OH, where they lived the next 20 some years in the Metamora area. Sometime between US Census of 1900 and that of 1910, John & Mary Wiley moved to what would be their final home in Adrian Twp, Lenawee Co, MI. Mary's youngest aunt Ida (May) Kidman (1853-1925) and her husband Simon Kidman (1854-1931), moved from Sandusky Co to Lenawee Co in 1904. Mary was slightly less than 2 yrs older than her aunt and the two girls were raised together, which is probably why the Wileys and Kidmans both settled in Lenawee Co, though it is not known which family arrived first. Mary's younger sister Lillian was also living in Lenawee Co in the US Census of 1910, with ther husband George F. Miller (1850-0922), who was John Wiley's step-brother. John & Mary both died in Lenawee Co – John on their farm in Adrian Twp in 1926 and Mary many years later in a nursing home in Adrian 1948. Following the death of her husband, Mary lived for several years with son-in-law and daughter Clarence & Bessie (Wiley) Bartlett, in Adrian, MI. Mary was still alive at the time her g-great grandson, the author of this bio, was born.
