John Sowers Obituary

John Sowers, a well known Pleasant Township farmer, died at his home 4 miles south of Ipava, Friday, January 26, 1917. Death was due to bladder trouble of long standing.

John Sowers was the son of Theodore and Margaret Sowers, and was born near Manchester, Maryland, October 2, 1850, being at the time of his death 66 years, 8 months and 24 days old.

He came with his parents to Ilinois in 1868. They settled on the farm just across the road from where our subject died, and on or near this farm the remainder of his life was spent.

January 1, 1874, he was united in marriage to Miss Melissa Rakestraw, who died October 12, 1895, leaving five children. They are: William and Elmer of Ipava; Henry of Cherokee, Kansas; Mrs. Bertha Harmon of Summum, and Mrs. Goldie Smith of Ipava.

February 16 1899, he again married to Miss Mary Johnson of Ipava. She, with the two children born to them, Russell and Lela, survive. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Mary Riley of Vermont, Mrs. Kate Vansickle of Yale, Iowa, and Mrs. Rachel Hughes of Summum.

Mr Sowers was plain and unassuming in his habits, industrious and a citizen of good repute. During his long and continued illness the ever faithful and loving ministrations of the members of his family tended to alleviate his suffering and shorten the long, weary months, thru all of which he was ever patient and uncomplaining.

Sunday, January 28, 1917 the remains were taken to Union Chapel where funeral services were conducted. Interment in cemetery adjoining.
