HENDERSON FAMILY. This is a day and age of reunions and it is with pleasure that the REPUBLICAN chronicles these happy family gatherings…

The Henderson family is one of the oldest in Johnson county. Thomas Henderson the founder of the family with his good wife, Mary Demott Henderson, came to Johnson county from Shelby county Kentucky in September 1835. Previous to their coming, Simon Covert had been here and located a claim, where Donnell’s hill now stands. He returned to Kentucky and told his neighbor, Thomas Henderson, of the fine land here and the prospect. Thomas and his good wife did not like Kentucky because that state tolerated slavery and this did not agree with their views. Thomas Henderson inquired of his neighbor if there was another piece of high ground where a church and school house could be built and was informed that there was such a place near Big Spring. So came Thomas Henderson and his wife to Indiana and Johnson county and their Big Spring farm was that now occupied by Albert List. They gave the land now occupied by the school house, church and cemetery, those indispensable adjuncts to every good neighborhood.
To them were born twelve children, two of whom died in infancy. There were six sons and four daughters, who lived and grew to manhood and womanhood and it was the children and grandchildren of these who met in reunion. Four of the ten were present as follows: John C., Isaac S. and Sam S. Henderson of Franklin and Mrs. Martha Vanarsdall of Kokomo. One daughter, Mary Ann Shuck, was too feeble to make the journey from her home in Fillmore, Ind, to attend.
The reunion was the first of the family but it was the first of a series, for the family will meet in reunion each year hereafter. The next reunion will be held at Tipton. Among those present from away were: Mrs. Mary Vanarsdall, Kokomo; Mrs. Susan Henderson; Fred and Ulysses Henderson and their families; William, Ed and James Voris, Tipton; Mrs. Anna Shields, Mrs. Della Cage and children, Sharpesville; Wm. Bowlby and family, St. Louis, Mo.; Henry Shuck and wife, Fillmore; David Ransdall and daughter, Edna, Vinton, Ia.; and Ellen Demott, Indianapolis.Parents were Thomas Henderson Sr. and Mary Erwin Henderson.
