Death Claims Alfred H. Hadley
The hundreds of friends of A. H. Hadley of Volcano were greatly shocked Monday afternoon to learn that he had passed away at 3:30 o'clock, having finally succumbed to the ravages of tuberculosis, after a struggle extending over a period of 13 years. For many months he had been failing rapidly, and on Sunday he was brought to Yampa from his ranch, in hopes that under proper medical care his life might be prolonged. The change was made too late, however, and death ensued less than 24 hours after his arrival here.
Alfred Herbert Haidley was born at Buckley, Ill., on December 19, 1870. In January, 1879, the family moved to Watscka, Ill., where the father and mother still reside. Here he remained until early manhood, when he went to Chicago, and after a year to northern Michigan. Here he was bookkeeper for a large wholesale hardware concern, and was known as one of the strongest men physically in that portion of the state. He excelled in athletics, and held the championship tor heavy lifting.
In ls 1895 he was operated upon for appendicitis, and tubucular trouble was discovered, the prospects of recovery being considered slight. After a year's treatment at a hospital in Chicago, he came to Colorado, locating at Eagle, where he soon won the staunch friendship of the entire community. In 1901 he located his homestead, about 15 miles southeast of Yampa, and on May 18, 1904, he was united in marriage with Miss Hulda LaForce. To this union one child was born, but it died in infancy.
Mr. Hadley was made a member of Egeria lodge No. 106, A. F. & A. M., on May 1, 1907, and the members of the Masonic fraternity had charge of the funeral, which was held from the Congregational church this afternoon.
In addition to his widow and his parents, deceased leaves six brothers and two sisters, this death being the first break in the large family. Only one of the immediate relatives, his brother. Walter N. Hadley of Chicago, was able to come to Yampa for the funeral.
Last year Mr. Hadley acted as manager for the Rocky Mountain Stores company at Eagle. Wherever he was known he was recognized as a useful citizen and a man of upright character and lovable nature. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved ones in their time of sadness.
The Yampa Leader, June 25, 1909.
