Smith – Midlothian, Tex, April 6 – J. Ed Smith, one of the pioneer settlers of Ellis County, died at the home of his son, D. C. Smith, near Midlothian. Mr. Smith was 85 years old and had been a resident of Ellis since 1851. He was a Confederate veteran, enlisting in the army at the beginning of the Civil War and continuing until its close. He was a member of the Baptist Church. He leaves one daughter and three sons. His body was buried in the Mountain Peak Cemetery.
In the 1890 Census, James is shown in Ellis County with his wife Nancy H.,58, son Joseph T,27, dau Louella J,21, son David C,18, and son Charles B,15. In the 1880 Census, there is also a daughter Maggie,14, and a brother Thomas H. Smith,54.
