Richard F. Houston, 71, 701 Oaknoll Drive died Thursday, August 1, 2002 at Mercy Hospital following a brief illness.

A Celebration of Dick's Life will be held Saturday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. Burial will be at a later date at Memory Gardens Cemetery. A reception will follow at Oaknoll Retirement Residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed the Iowa City School District Foundation for the City High Art and Theatre Departments.

Dick was born August 23, 1930 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Glenn F. and Victoria Boyles Houston.

In 1952 Dick received his BA in theatre and in 1960 his MA in Political Science from the University of Iowa. He had served in the US Army.

He was associated with The Means Agency as a realtor for many years. He later was an advertising representative for KCJJ, and also owned and operated the West Liberty Motel. He had enjoyed his retirement since the early 1990s.

He was a member and past president of the Iowa City Noon Kiwanis, the Iowa City Board of Realtors and the Iowa City Jaycees. Dick served on the board of the Iowa City Community Theatre.

He was a well-known actor in Iowa City, where he performed in numerous productions at the Iowa City Community Theatre and Riverside Theatre. Dick was a skilled artist. Many of his pieces are displayed in local businesses and homes.

He is survived by his two children, Sage Stephen Houston and his wife, Judith Bourgeois of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and Diane Tollenaar and her husband David of Clinton, Iowa; his former wife, Peggy Houston of Iowa City; one brother, G. Phil Houston and his wife Doris of Richardson, Texas; one sister, Jan Tuohy of Flint, Michigan; his uncle, Brig./General Francis Richard Boyle of Honolulu, Hawaii; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
