SOLDIER'S FUNERAL

The body of Pvt. Howard Francis Jurden, 19, Churchtown, casualty of World War II, arrived in Marietta, Tuesday, and funeral services will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. at the St. John the Baptist church, Churchtown, of which the young man was a member. Burial will be in the cemetery adjoining the church, and Marietta Post No. 1, American Legion, and Washington County Post No. 5108, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will accord military honors. (4/21/1949)

Pvt. Jurden was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard M. Jurden of Churchtown, and was born Dec. 25, 1925. He graduated in 1944 from Marietta high school and was shortly afterwards inducted into the Army. He received his basic training at Ft. McClellan, Ala., and then was sent to Ft. George Meade, Md., from where he was sent overseas. He landed in France Dec. 16, 1944, and lost his life two weeks later Jan. 1, 1945, in the Battle of the Bulge. Pvt. Jurden was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.

Survivors are: his parents and five sisters, Mrs. Clifford Fleming of Columbus; Mrs. Jack Malone of Williamstown, W. Va.; Miss Mary Ellen Jurden of Marietta, and Patricia Ann and Priscilla Jurden of the family home. Frank Schwendeman of Waterford Rt 1, is the grandfather.
