Her maiden name was Rebecca Utterback, and she was born in Frankfort County, Kentucky on April 10, 1817. She was married to Mahlon Hanks in Johnson Co., Ind., in the year 1837. They immigrated from Indiana to Keokuk Co., Iowa, in 1877.
Mrs. Hanks was the mother of seven children, five of whom are now living, namely Mrs. John Bucher, Mrs. Sarah Jefferson, Mrs. Louisa Goligraft, Abner Hanks and Lewis Hanks.
Mrs. Hanks was united with the Christian Church in Indiana in 1845 and always lived an upright and religious life. She was universally loved by those who knew her and many will sincerely mourn her loss.
