Sarah Leitner Burke, 93, of Ft Myers, died Jan 4, 2002. She was born Jan 29, 1908 in Estero, FL, daughter of Ada & Kettie A. Leitner, and grew up in Bonita Springs. She graduated from Ft Myers High School in 1926 and received her education degree from Florida SOuthern College in Lakeland, FL. She taught at Sanibel School when it was one room, Edgewood Elementary and Allen Park Elementary.
Sarah was a member of St Luke's Episcopal Church, Lee County Retired Teachers, Lee County Pioneer's Club, Daughter's of the American Revolution and the Magna Carta Dames. She was an avid reader of at least a dozen books a month until her death. Sarah is survived by her sister, Alice Leitner Conner of Tampa, FL; and was preceded in death by her husband, Walter E. Burke; her sons, Walter Burke, Jr; her twin sister, Mary Leitner Alvrus; sister Doris Leitner Barfield; and her brother, Lewis E. Leitner. "Aunt Sally" is survived by her many loving nieces and nephews, as well as their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving neighbors of over 40 years, Johnnie & Minor Bott. Aunt Sally's unconditional love will be missed by all of us forever. Requien Eucharist will be celebrated Wed, Jan 9 at 1:00 PM at St Luke's Episcopal Church with the Rev Dr. Sudduth Cummings, Interim Rector, officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Myers Cemetery. Arrangements by Harvey-Engelhardt-Metz Funeral Home 936-2177.
