ELAINE SHERMAN CROSSLEY

"His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.'

Elaine Sherman Crossley was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, one of eight children of Rosa and Arthur Sherman. Her parents were florists and owned one of the oldest African-American businesses in Cincinnati, still in operation. Sherman's Flower Shop was established in 1926.

Elaine had painted for almost fifty years and had written poetry even longer. As long as she could remember, she wanted to be an artist. Although her major was not in art, but in clothing, textiles and fibers, Elaine studied art at the University of Cincinnati and the Art Institute of Chicago. Later, after moving to California, she studied ceramics and jewelry making. Elaine's art, characterized by strong geometric design and bold colors, has been exhibited in the Bay Area extensively and locally in the Sacramento region. She was artist-in-residence at the Mid-Peninsula YWCA in Palo Alto, the Ebony Museum of Art in Oakland, and the Berkeley Plaza gallery in Oakland.

Elaine married Dr. Frank A. Crossley, a metallurgical engineer now retired, in 1950. Their daughter Desne A. Crossley, lives in Massachusetts and works as a development officer at Radcliffe college.

Elaine was active in community affairs all of her life. Most recently, she was a member of the Loomis basin Congregational united church of Christ, serving on the Women's Fellowship and the Missions Committee and on the Minister Search Committee.

Claine made her transition on Thursday, November 7, 1996, at 1:45 p.m. She was preceded in death by her three older brothers; Dallas, Jack and Charles Sherman; her eldest sister; Mary and Mary's husband, Ralph Belsinger.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Frank; her daughter Desne; two sisters; Louisa and Rose Sherman; a younger brother; Arthur; three sisters by marriage; Elizabeth, Beatrice, and Jean Sherman, Vera Crossley, and Inez Williams; and brothers by marriage; Joseph Crossley and George Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.

Memorial donations to be made to Loomis Basin Congregation UCC in memory of Elaine S. Crossley or United American Cancer Society.

Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. at Loomis Basin Congregational United Church of Christ, 6440 King Road, Loomis, Ca 95659.
