Death of Captain James Barnard
Captain James Barnard an old and respected citizen of Upper Alton passed quietly away at 5:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon, aged 75 years. His death was not unexpected as for several days past he was stricken with Bright disease. Capt. Barnard was an old time steamboat master when steamboating on the Mississippi was in its palmy days and was highly successful. He has been for a number of years past engaged in insurance business in St. Louis and but a short time ago gave up employment to retire in Upper Alton. Three sons, William D., Eaton, and Luke; and two daughters, Belle and Lavina Barnard, survive him. The funeral will take place from his home in Upper Alton Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
