Joseph Fauver was the son of Henry and Maria Elisabeth Fauver of Pittsgrove, Salem, NJ, He was also the twin brother of George, and brother of Henry and Frederick Fauver, who were all Revolutionary War Patriots. Records show that both he and brother George were baptized on 29 October 1754 at the Swedish Lutheran Church of Penns Neck, NJ (see a copy of the original record-entry under photos). Joseph first married, Sylvia (1744-1795), and had daughters, Jacominte and Elizabeth. Following the death of Sylvia, he married Ruth Tullis and they had three children: Ruth, Joseph, Jr and Anne. Burial records of the Presbyterian Church of Bridgeton, NJ, indicate Joseph, Sr, was buried in that church's Old Broad Street cemetery on the 26th day of August 1806. Joseph and Ruth's children Joseph, Jr and Ruth are also buried in this cemetery, as well as his first wife, Sylvia.
Joseph served with Captain Cornelius Nieukirk's Second Regiment, Salem County Militia, from the Township of Pittsgrove, while guarding property seized from Tories during April 1778. He did not, however, qualify for a war pension due to the brevity of his service.
Joseph Fauver, a carpenter and joiner by trade, was the builder and owner of the "Crooked-end House" located at 249/251 East Commerce Street, Bridgeton, NJ; just a short walk from the cemetery where he's buried. The house today is 220 years old, having been built in the year 1792. It is listed in the Cumberland County Register of Historic Structures and Sites and is believed to be the oldest dwelling, in Bridgeton, east of the Cohansey River; it is still occupied today.
Newspaper articles indicate that Joseph's grave was originally marked with a piece of native stone with the initials "JF" carved thereon. In 1937, the present headstone was provided by the US Government at the request of the County Supervisor for Soldiers' Burials, B F Krieg.
