MONROE CITY, Mo. -- Garrill Newton Allensworth, 76, of Monroe City, formerly of New Canton, Ill., died Sunday (Dec. 4, 2011) in the Monroe City Manor Care Center in Monroe City.

Garrill was born on Aug. 11, 1935, in the home of his parents, Casper and Thelma McNary Allensworth on McNary Lane in Pike County, Ill. He and Mary Rozanna Kelley were married June 10, 1956, in Hull, Ill., and she survives.

Garrill attended West Pike High School and was a grain farmer in Pike County, Ill.

In 1957, Garrill was inducted into the New Canton Masonic Lodge 821 AF&AM and received his lambskin apron, accepting it as a symbol of the purity of character and behavior in the way he wished to conduct his life. When he brought it home he asked his young wife, Mary, to store it in a safe place because it would be used one day during his funeral service. Later that summer, the Mississippi's water level rose, threatening to flood his home. Garrill and Mary slept with a suitcase packed and a boat tied to a maple tree in the front yard, in the event that the levee broke. The levee did breach and Garrill and Mary left in the boat carrying with them their most prized possessions: their infant daughter, Cheryl, the top tier of their wedding cake and the Masonic apron safely tied in a plastic bag to protect it. He was a member of New Canton Masonic Lodge 821 AF&AM for over 50 years and during his 50-year membership he served in offices of Junior Deacon, Junior Warden, Senior Warden, Worshipful Master, Secretary, Chaplain and Treasurer.

Garrill was a member of United Methodist Church of New Canton and was active in the community where he served as Pleasant Vale Township Supervisor and Pleasant Vale Township Board member, a member of the Pike County Emergency Corp, a volunteer for the New Canton Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Kinderhook Flying Club; volunteered with the Relay for Life of Ralls County; and served as president for two terms in the Villa de Woods Subdivision.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, restoring antique tractors, gardening, puzzles, flying model airplanes, attending auctions, coin collecting, playing cards and dominoes and carpentry.

He is survived by his mother, Thelma Allensworth; his wife Mary and children, Cheryl (Kenneth) Patterson of Monroe City, Kelly (Mike) Lundberg of Hull, Ill., Kevin (Angela Harrison) Allensworth of DeWitt, Iowa, Tracy Owens of Sterling, Ill., and Brady Allensworth of Wichita, Kansas. Six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive along with two sisters, Sandra Vincent of Hull and Janice Shue of Barry, Ill.

He was preceded in death by a son, Bradley Allensworth, in 1958; his father, Casper, in 1965; and a brother, Lyle "Gene" Allensworth.
