Robert attended Oberlin College and then began the study of medicine with his father and brother, John. He later attended medical lectures in the Medical Department of the University of Michigan and graduated in March, 1863. On June 14, 1865, Robert married Cynthia J. Fry. He spent a year, from 1872 until 1873, in Europe devoting some time in the medical schools of Paris and Berlin to study his profession. He aided in the organization of the Sandusky County Medical Society and was a member of the Ohio State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity for nearly thirty years.
Robert and Cynthia had three children: Henry, Anna and Ada.
