Joseph and his brothers were early settlers in Walden, Vermont. Around 1804 he purchased property in Craftsbury's Mill Village, where he built a house and operated a mill. His father, Edward Gilman, (abt. 1734 - Dec 1799) had purchased and operated for 30 years the proprietor's mill in Gilmanton, but joined his sons in Walden when he became blind late in life.
