Our adored and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, Donald Victor Cook, passed away in his home on Thursday, November 24, 2011, at age eighty-two, surrounded by his family. He is our hero and we will miss him immensely.
Don was born November 13, 1929 to Franklin Jensen Cook and LoVenna Sorensen in Salt Lake City, Utah. He grew up in Midvale and Holladay, and attended Granite High School and the University of Utah.
He married Nancy Lynne Sleater on March 18, 1955 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He served in the Army, where his favorite assignment was on the ski patrol in Garmisch, Germany.
Don grew up working alongside his father and mother at Cook Coal & Lumber and Cook & Alsop. He spent most of his career as President and CEO of Cook Lumber in Murray, UT carrying on his father's legacy.
Don was valiant in his testimony of Jesus Christ. He served a full time mission to South Africa from 1949-1951. Through his life, he served in a variety of callings from Scouting, to Bishop, to Stake President.
Don was an extremely hard worker and derived great joy in serving others. He was always trying to help someone "get their ox out of the mire! " He blessed the lives of countless people not only through church service, but also through his abundant generosity and selfless service. Don and Lynne served two service missions together.
Don and Lynne loved riding horses-especially in the mountains and spent years raising and showing Arabians on a National level. They also enjoyed traveling, snow skiing, snowmobiling, camping, boating, water skiing, hunting, and spending time with their grandkids.
Don was a true outdoorsman. He loved his cabin property in Beaver Creek Ranch and enjoyed sharing it with others. It was the year-round gathering place for the family for fifty years. Everything at the cabin was fun for him including his famous work projects! … all to make it more enjoyable for the family. His life was about FAMILY!
Don was an absolute gentleman, and always opened doors and treated others with respect. We are grateful for his never-ending example.
Don is survived by his sweetheart, Lynne; children: Laurie (Kelvyn, Jr.) Cullimore, Todd (Donnarae), Derek (Alberto), Cami (Josh) Burgon, and Carrie (Mike) Wagstaff, twenty-six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; foster daughter, Lori Mannie; and sister, Belva Freeman.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, December 5, 2011 in the Millcreek Stake Center, 4220 South Jeannine Drive (420 East). Prior to the funeral, a viewing will be held at the stake center from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 4, 2011 and again from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Monday.
Interment: Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South).
