Ernest Joseph Bischoff, age 87, of Sunman, died peacefully at his home Thursday, May 8, 2014.

Born on September 23, 1926, in St. Leon, he was the son of Joseph and Lena Hoffman Bischoff. He married Hazel Phyllis Smith on May 13, 1950, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Leon. They resided in Harrison for 16 years, until 1966, when they moved to Sunman. Ernie worked at a dairy farm in New Haven, Ohio, for five years and a poultry farm in Harrison for 14 years. In 1965, he began working at Hill-Rom in Batesville and retired from there after 27 years of service. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church of Harrison until moving to Sunman when he and his family became members of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. Ernie was a volunteer fireman for five years at Sunman Rural Fire Department. In his free time, he enjoyed playing cards and checkers.

Those surviving include his wife of almost 64 years, Phyllis Bischoff; children, Sheila Morrow of Greens-burg, Thomas (Patricia) Bischoff of Delaware and Judy (Donald) Stenger of St. Leon; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Patty Bischoff of Hamilton, Ohio; brothers, Francis (Doris) Bischoff of Blooming Grove and Wilfred (Betty) Bischoff of St. Leon; sister-in-law, Ruth Bischoff of St. Leon; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ruth and Russell Sauerland of Brookville, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Ernest Lee Bischoff; grandson, Samuel Joseph Brumback; son-in-law, Gene Morrow; sisters, Angela Wilhelm and Dorothy Bischoff; and brothers, Leroy Bischoff and Alfred Bischoff.

Visitation was Sunday, May 11, at Cook Rosen-berger Funeral Home in Sunman, where the Rosary was recited. The Mass of Christian burial, officiated by Rev. Shaun Whittington, was Monday, May 12, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Family requests memorials be directed to St. Nicholas School or Decatur County Hospice.
