Services were Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Westphalia for Raymond John Schmitz, 78, of Westphalia. The Rev. Robert A. Kurwicki conducted the funeral for Mr. Schmitz, who died Friday at the Westphalia Retirement Center. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Mr. Schmitz was born Apr 22, 1922 in Jefferson City to Frank H. Schmitz and the former Josephine Redel. He was married Jun 21, 1947 at Rich Fountain to the formerMartha J. Zeilman, who survives at the home. A graduate of Westphalia High School and an Army veteran of WW II, he owned and operated the Westphalia Milling Co. for 55 years.

Other survivors include four sons, Harold Schmitz and Stanley Schmitz, both of Westphalia, James Schmitz of Rich Fountain and Dr. Ralph Schmitz of Monett; two daughters, Barbara Fitzpatrick of Jefferson City and Mary Lea Singleton of Vienna; a brother, Urban Schmitz of Jefferson City; and a sister, Delores Mertens of Winter Park, FL. Another brother, Leonard Schmitz, preceded him in death.

Hoer's Book of Births lists baptism as Apr 22, 1922 with sponsors John Redel and Elizabeth Redel.
