On October 14, 1936, in Argyle, he was married to Pauline Schulte, who preceded him in death on November 29, 1997.
He owned Meta Milling Company which later became Diamond Pet Foods and retired from DeLong's Steel in Jefferson City. He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church.
Survivors include two sons, Eugene Schmitz of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, and Leon Schmitz and wife Cindy of Westphalia; two daughters, Dianne Ingram and husband Ron of Pratt, Kansas, and Elaine Farmer of Independence; one sister, Delores Mertens of Winter Park, Florida; ten grand-children and two great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Raymond and Leonard Schmitz.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 22, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Meta. Rev. Mark Porterfield will officiate. Interment will be in St. Cecilia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday at Rekus Funeral Home in Meta with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
