Cathryn H. Pike, 93, died at home in Suisun, surrounded by her children, on Oct. 21, 2011, following a fall and brief illness.

She was born on Aug. 15, 1918, in Mason City, Iowa, the second child of E. G. and Clara (Johnson) Holland. The first member of her family to attend college, she graduated with distinction in 1940 from the State University of Iowa, having received many honors and prizes throughout her academic career, including election to Phi Beta Kappa.

After working as a teacher in Illinois and as a mathematician in Washington, D.C., she married James L. Pike on April 21, 1945. She became a homemaker, raising four children in Maryland. The family moved to Sunnyvale in 1964.

After her beloved husband of 27 years died in 1972, Mrs. Pike moved to Suisun to be near her parents, whom she cared for until each of them died.

Throughout her high school and college years, she was an avid musician, playing several instruments in orchestras and bands. She loved cats and flowers, as well as children. Her sweet and easy smile was a pleasure to all who met her.

She is survived by her children Judith Bellamy of Vermont, Stephen Pike of Vallejo, and Cynthia Pike of Berkeley; a grandson, Jesse Pike (wife Ann) of Douglas City; four great-grandchildren; a nephew; her devoted longtime caregivers, Eva Kliss and Mely Calip; and her beloved cat, Kitty.

She was predeceased by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Ernest and Kenneth, both of Fairfield; and a son, Richard, of Washington.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2075 Dover Ave., Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society or NAMI. Arrangements are being handled by Fairfield Funeral Home, 707-425-1041.
