Thomas S. was the oldest son of James and Catherine Gillis Copeland. Although some researchers have given both parents a middle name there is no documentation of this whatsoever.

On Aug 12, 1833 he married Elizabeth Patterson in Lauderdale County, Alabama. Elizabeth died after Nov 1841. They were the parents of two children.

About 1843 Thomas married Martha Ann Qualls. They are listed on the 1850 - 1880 census of Wayne County, Tennessee. They were the parents of seven children.

On June 14, 1862 Thomas enlisted as a Private in Co. G. 10th Regiment. Physical description was 5 feet 10 1/2 inches, fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes. He later received a pension from the Federal Government for his service in the Civil War.

In about 1870 Thomas S. began "keeping company" with Anna Frances "Fan" Perry of Hardin County. Five children were born of this relationship.

Wife Martha passed away in 1884. After that time, it is believed that Thomas lived with first one child and then another. At the time of the 1900 census he was living with son William Thomas Copeland in Hardin County.

A military marker was placed at this grave in 1984 by Sandra Haney Tedford.
